Polly Billington MP Labour MP for East Thanet
Polly has held coffee mornings across East Thanet during the August parliamentary recess, to hear directly from constituents about their priorities for politics and the action they want to see from government.
Speaking after the coffee mornings, Polly said:
Parliament closes during August, which gave me the chance to spend the summer in Thanet – not just enjoying our wonderful seaside towns, but allowing me the time to invite local residents to coffee mornings across our constituency and listen to their concerns firsthand.
With Westminster’s hectic schedule on pause, these gatherings in Salmestone, Dane Valley, Newington, Northwood, and Viking brought together local residents, the police, and Labour councillors to discuss community issues. Sitting down over a cuppa and biscuits was a reminder that politics isn’t just about votes in Parliament – it’s about listening to people where they live and making sure their voices are heard.
Many conversations underscored the impact of struggling public services. Residents spoke about families stuck in unsuitable housing, pensioners navigating the confusing benefits system, or loved ones searching for fair work. These are the challenges that keep people awake at night.
My team and I are here to help – whether it’s contacting housing providers, chasing the DWP, or linking people to local organisations who can help. No one should feel they have to face these battles alone. All too often these deeply personal challenges speak to the broader state of the country, and the ongoing problems Britain faces after fourteen years of spending cuts and the pandemic.
One theme is persistent: People don’t feel the country has worked for them for quite some time, and that needs to change. My belief that government can and should deliver for people is why I first entered politics, and why I stood to be your MP. Making sure everyone has a stake in society, a safe place to live, and money in their pockets, will always be what drives me.
