48,180 households in East Thanet are set to receive a £100 council tax rebate to help them with their energy bills, East Thanet’s Labour MP has confirmed.
Polly Billington MP, who is also the government minister responsible for helping people with their energy bills, said the help was essential for giving hardworking families breathing space from the high cost of energy triggered by the war in Iran.
This week, Chancellor John Healey confirmed that every household living in a Band A – D property would receive the payment in January 2027, paid for by a tax on big banks.
The measure was just one of a range of policies announced in the budget to help bring down energy costs, with others including:
- The extension of the removal of VAT from electricity bills, saving households an average of £50 per year.
- The abolition of Standing Charges, a flat fee paid by all gas customers no matter how much energy they use. Two thirds of households will save an average of £45 a year from the change.
- The continuation of previous cuts made to levies on energy bills, which are continuing to deliver households an average saving of £150.
Speaking after the budget, Polly said:
“I know how much pressure the war in the Middle East is putting on household energy bills, so as the energy bills minister I want to do all I can to give families some breathing space at such a difficult time.”
”The announcement by the Chancellor of £100 for more than 40,000 households in Thanet to help with their bills, on top of further cuts to energy taxes and fees, will help take the pressure off this winter. That’s really important to help people get by as the government doubles down on our plan to end Britain’s reliance on foreign oil and gas and deliver the cheap, homegrown energy that will bring down bills for good.”
